World Book Day 2018

Posted by: admin In: Blog 24 Apr 2018 Comments: 0

The main aim of World Book Day is to encourage children to explore the pleasures of books and reading by providing them different books with lots of stories to read

We celebrated this special day with the bright students of Govt School Junior Model No. 1 Pahariwala in Karachi, where we shared with them the joys of reading and the importance of books in our lives.

The children read different stories from CLF Publications along with matching art activities -character cut outs from the books to be put put together and coloured to reinforce their role in the books . We had lots of fun!
The children read “Tota Khan aur Bakri Ara Ka Safar Nama” and “Laila aur Munni Guriya” written by Director CLF, and Author Rumana Husain

On this World Book Day 2018 nothing better could have been achieved but being with Master Ayub our award winning teacher of World Teachers’ Day in Pakistan, a courageous and generous citizen (firefighter by day and teacher by afternoon) who set up an “Open School” in F 6/2 Islamabad decades ago to share what we can do to help our children learn under any circumstances.

We read passages from the chlldren’s magazine Uran Tashtaree (UT)/flying saucer on Mangho Pir in Karachi -UT is a bi-monthly serial of the Children’s Literature Festival edited by Amra Alam a famous author and learning activist inspiring children’s imagination. We enjoyed the reading and Master Ayub also decided to do these readings every Saturday as children are only focusing on textbooks, homework and exams -but imagination and other book reading gets ignored! This was a great decision indeed.

The teachers and children also signed the Financing for Education petition by ITA’s Right to Education initiative as it was the beginning of the Global Action Week for Education (GAWE ) 2018. Imagine two important days being celebrated with Master Ayub and his Open School students! Loved it ..

CLF Multan 2018: Empowering Girls through Education

CLF Multan 2018: Empowering Girls through Education

Children’s Literature Festival went to the small union council of Muzaffarabad in Multan on the 3rd of April 2018, and it was an amazing experience!

In the middle of the Industrial Estates on the outskirts of Multan city, CLF found immense talent and a thirst for knowledge that was uplifting to witness. Idara e Taleem o Aagahi and Oxfam Pakistan have jointly led a project for female empowerment in the region for the past 2 years. Accordingly, this Children’s Literature Festival was structured around the theme of ‘Educating and Empowering Girls: Raising Leaders of Tomorrow’. One thousand plus students from nine girls’ schools in the area participated in the day long festival and each one of them proved the important role that education plays in attaining gender justice.

High school students lifting up their tiny six year old school fellows to help them peer through the microscope at the scientific inquiry corner. Passionate fifth graders delivering fiery speeches to support their right to education. Curious twelve year olds learning about recycling and sustainability and discussing ideas for more projects. Shy eight year olds laughing with joy at being able to craft origami shapes from a piece of paper. Excited eleven year olds participating in a digital story making session. Thirteen year olds questioning literary figures about the evolutional of Saraiki, the regional language spoken by most of them. Inquisitive nine year olds fascinated by the intricate techniques used in traditional craft-making.

The CLF program takes shape on paper and it is the energy of participants that brings it to life. At Muzaffarabad, the eagerness to learn more was palpable. In a conservative Southern union council, the schools’ teachers could be seen as engrossed in the activity sessions as their students, a sight that spoke volumes about the need to explore innovative approaches to imparting education.

As the festival wound up, young girls from different schools besieged the CLF team, requesting that we be at their schools the next day, with more multi-sensory learning sessions for them: a heartwarming response that carries the CLF movement forward.
CLF will be back soon, girls!

Sport helps healthy, creative and focused minds learn more in the classroom

Peace, tolerance, respect and inclusion are among the values children can learn through games, says a Global Youth Ambassador from Pakistan.

The Children’s Literature Festival (CLF) was held in the Walled City of Lahore in January, on the theme of “Celebrating peace, heritage and 70 years of Pakistan”.

CLF aims to develop the reading habits of children by familiarising them with book culture. Different sessions such as storytelling, theatre, music, literature and sports were held by the historical Lahore Fort.

I believe that we require a mix of culture and education in order to provide a better quality of education.

This would improve the level of learning in metropolitan cities such as Lahore, a lack of which has previously been an issue. Promotion of reading and books is a way to move towards a better future.

I was given the opportunity to implement a “Sports for Development and Peace”(SDP) campaign at CLF. I held multiple sessions with children to teach them different values through sport. They learned peace, tolerance, respect, responsibility, trust and inclusion through different team-based activities.

During these activities, children learned respect for their teammates, which in turn helped the success of their team. They also learned responsibility, which helps them to become a valued part of society in the long term.

The values of trust and inclusion teaches children how to trust their peers and include isolated people in society.

Trust helps you to make friends and gives you the confidence to learn and achieve things in your life. Inclusion helps you to promote equality and include people despite differences – for example, including physically-challenged children in schools with other children. It also promotes gender equality.

Learning these core values at school teaches children about positive attitudes. In the future their generation will grow up differently. These values will help to eradicate extremism from grass-roots level.

The children also learned about tolerance, which promotes peace from a broader perspective. Tolerance teaches you to listen, understand and respect differences of opinion and diversity of culture and religion.

SDP activities gave the children an opportunity to learn through fun, enjoyment and following the rules of the games. Fun-based learning helps with making friends and developing personalities. The children became more focused and creative.

In school I learned how sports improves mental and physical health. We need to make sure our kids practise sports in schools, as healthy, creative and focused minds learn more in the classroom.

I will conclude with an example of an SDP activity from my sessions. “Fox and chicken” was one of the activities I supervised. In the activity, the group of children helped the “chicken” to escape from the “fox”.

This game develops a trust factor in the participants, as they work as a team without differences, they follow the rules (responsibility) and are all equal and respectful to each other.

Playing under these rules teaches children tolerance and how to develop their strengths.

I hope my fellow activists and civil society will play their role to include sports in the public schools of Lahore. During my visits to public primary schools in Lahore and nearby districts I witnessed that children have no facilities and opportunities to practise sports.
